IT HAPPENED THIS MORNING AROUND 11 ON GILMER AVENUE. ACCORDING TO THE U.S. MARSHALS SERVICE, JOSE ZAPATA PADILLA CAME TO WINSTON-SALEM FROM LONG ISLAND, NEW YORK. THEY TELL US HE’D BEEN ON THE RUN FOR ABOUT A YEAR. IT’S UNCLEAR WHAT EXACTLY BROUGHT HIM TO WINSTON-SALEM, BUT WE DO KNOW WHEN AUTHORITIES ARRIVED. THEY SAY HE REFUSED THEIR COMMANDS AND TRIED TO ESCAPE THROUGH THE ATTIC OF A HOME THAT HE WAS STAYING IN, BUT ENDED UP FALLING THROUGH THE CEILING OF A CONNECTED HOME WHERE A FAMILY, INCLUDING CHILDREN, WERE INSIDE AT THE TIME. THERE’S ALSO A LARGE LAW ENFORCEMENT PRESENCE TODAY IN LOWGAP. THAT’S THE AREA OF SPURLIN LANE, WHICH IS A DIRT ROAD OFF OF WEST PINE STREET. WE COUNTED AT LEAST 33 ZERO SURRY COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICERS THERE, DIFFERENT CRUISERS, A LARGE PRESENCE, AS WELL AS EMS CREWS AND MEMBERS OF THE SKULL CAMP VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT. NEIGHBORS TELL US THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON SINCE AT LEAST EARLY THIS MORNING. WE’VE BEEN WORKING TO GET SOME DETAILS FROM INVESTIGATORS, BUT SO FAR HAVE NOT YET HEARD BACK. AND IN GREENSBORO, POLICE SAY THREE JUVENILES ARE BEING CHARGED WITH MURDER IN THE DEATH OF AN 18 YEAR OLD BACK ON JANUARY 5TH. OF THIS YEAR. ZION CLINTON DIED AFTER BEING SHOT IN THE HEAD THE DAY PRIOR. POLICE SAY THEY ARRESTED TWO JUVENILES AT SMITH HIGH SCHOOL LAST WEDNESDAY. OFFICERS ARRESTED A THIRD SUSPECT TODAY. ALL THREE ARE CHARGED WITH FIRST DEGREE MURDER AND WILL BE CHARGED AS ADULTS. HOWEVER, POLICE HAVE NOT IDENTIFIED THEM AT THIS TIME.
