INVOLVED IN THE SHOOTING. THAT’S RIGHT. THE BAILIFF WAS INVOLVED IN TRYING TO HELP STOP THE SITUATION FROM HAPPENING. THE INVESTIGATION CONTINUES HERE AT THIS HOUR. POLICE TELL 11 NEWS A 35 YEAR OLD MAN IS IN CRITICAL CONDITION AT AN AREA HOSPITAL. THE INCIDENT HAPPENED HERE AT THE EAST SIDE DISTRICT COURTHOUSE IN EAST BALTIMORE, AT THE AT NORTH AVENUE AND HARFORD ROAD. THIS STARTED AROUND 840 THIS MORNING. BALTIMORE CITY POLICE SAY A MAN ENTERED THE COURTHOUSE. IT BECAME CLEAR THAT HE WAS SUFFERING FROM A BEHAVIORAL CRISIS. HE KEPT WALKING BACK AND FORTH. BAILIFFS TRIED TO INTERACT WITH THE MAN. POLICE SAY THE MAN PULLED A GUN AND THEN POINTED IT TO HIS HEAD. BAILIFFS TRIED TO GET HIM TO DROP THE WEAPON. HE DID NOT, AND THE BAILIFF FIRED A SHOT AT THE MAN. POLICE ALSO SAY THE MAN SHOT HIMSELF. MAYOR BRANDON SCOTT AND POLICE COMMISSIONER RICHARD WORLEY WERE HERE AT THE SCENE, AND THIS IS WHAT THEY TOLD US ABOUT THE INCIDENT. HE DID NOT GET THROUGH THE SECURITY SYSTEM. WHAT HAPPENED IS IT LOOKS LIKE HE WENT THROUGH THE SECOND SET OF DOUBLE DOORS. HE NEVER REACHED THE SECURITY SYSTEM, AND HE APPARENTLY STARTED IT WAS CLEAR THAT HE WAS SUFFERING FROM SOME KIND OF BEHAVIORAL CRISIS BY HIS MANNERISMS. HE WALKED BACK AND FORTH A LITTLE BIT, AND THE BAILIFFS TRIED TO ADDRESS HIM. THE SHERIFF’S DEPUTIES TRIED TO ADDRESS HIM, AND THEN HE WITHDREW THE WEAPON FROM HIS UNDER HIS GARMENTS AND POINTED IT AT HIS HEAD. BEHAVIORAL AND MENTAL HEALTH IS A REAL AND DEEP ISSUE, AND WE HAVE TO CONTINUE TO DO EVERYTHING THAT WE CAN TO DEAL WITH IT. AND THIS IS ALSO ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF HOW WE HAVE TO MAKE SURE THAT PEOPLE WHO ARE HAVING THESE KIND OF ISSUES DON’T HAVE THAT EASY ACCESS TO FIREARMS AND WEAPONS. AGAIN, THE MAN IS IN CRITICAL CONDITION AT AN AREA HOSPITAL. THE COURTHOUSE REMAINS CLOSED AS THIS INVESTIGATION CONTINUES. WE’LL HAVE MORE TONIGHT AT FIVE AND SIX.

BPD: Man shoots himself in head at North Avenue courthouse

The North Avenue District Courthouse in Baltimore is closed Friday after a shooting.North Avenue and Harford Road are closed. Officials ask the public to avoid the area.Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley said a 35-year-old man entered the Eastside District Court on North Avenue in Baltimore around 8:40 a.m. Friday.”As he went into the courthouse, he was clearly suffering from behavioral crisis, he was walking back and forth,” Worley said. “Sheriff’s deputies and the bailiffs tried to interact with him. At some point, he withdrew a firearm from his body, pointed it at his head. The deputies tried to get him to drop his weapon.”Worley said a bailiff, who is a retired BPD member, is preliminarily believed to have fired two shots, striking the man in the lower extremities. The police commissioner explained how the man entered the courthouse, but did not get past the security checkpoint.”What happened is it looked like he went through the second set of double doors; he never reached the security system,” Worley said. “It was clear he was suffering from some kind of behavioral crisis by his mannerisms — he walked back and forth a little bit.””This, of course, is a tragic situation. I want to thank all the law enforcement involved,” Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott said. “This again shows behavior and mental health is a real and deep issue.
