‘Nigella did it differently because she was so sexy and she actually gave a lot of herself in a cheeky personality-driven way… I’m not sure whether Nigella would win an award for being technically the best chef but she brought an accessibility and an interest because of her personality and her style.’

If Lawson defined 2000s lifestyle, Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop reigned in the 2010s. Paltrow, bored of acting, began Goop as a newsletter from her North London kitchen table, sharing tips for travel, shopping and recipes with selected friends.

Goop soon grew into a website, product lines, pop-up stores, collaborations with other brands, a Netflix show, summits, retreats and more. It is now Paltrow’s primary focus, employs around 216 staff and has a valuation of around $250 million.

Paltrow did something different from her fellow lifestyle moguls. She embraced luxury and wellness, blending privilege and aspiration, while not shying away from controversy. Goop infamously endorsed the practice of inserting jade eggs into a woman’s nether regions, prompting a backlash from gynaecologists.
